VYPE got a chance to sit down with Caiden Unruh of Maize boys cross country and find out more about who he is.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
I hope to medal at state, something I have never done before. I started at JV my freshman year and have been consistently PRing every year so a state medal would be a great way to finish off my running career and make the 4 years worth it.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
This past summer, we went on our annual cross country Colorado trip with the team and it is one of the last times I got to truly hang out with the seniors who graduated last year, whom I was very close to. In total it was a week long and I never wanted it to end.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher is my Woods Teacher, Mr. Coker. I love to woodwork and I am greeted everyday with a smile and a joke. We are currently working on a table, which I am designing completely from scratch. Mr. Coker has helped me throughout everything, with a lot of dad jokes during the process.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
At regionals last year, we put 5 boys in the top 8 for a score of 24. The entire boys team were true brothers last year and a great regionals was the best way to cap off an amazing year.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
I have run with Alex Ayin since middle school and he always gives 100%. He puts in the work at home and during practice and is always an inspiration to the younger guys on the team as well as myself
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
The seniors from my freshman and sophomore years left a huge impression on me, and since then I couldn’t wait to be a senior and do the same. We have 10 underclassmen guys this year and I want to do my part to show them how to lead the team their senior year by showing them our traditions and how to be an eagle.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
I would love to go to the Pacific Northwest on a big trip with my teammates from past and present years. I love cooler weather with little wind (the opposite of Kansas) and I think staying in a big house and enjoying nature would be perfect.
VYPE: If we gave you $1,000 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
I think I would probably just go out with friends and do as many things as we can in one day.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
I volunteer at my church usually every week.
