Maize South’s Ava Howie – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by iCryo

By: Jamin Anderson

Maize South senior Ava Howie has been a varsity starter since she was a freshman and has been a part of some good teams for the Lady Mavericks coming into the year, with a 42-24 career record. In the offseason, Howie says she was focused on both her inside and outside game, hoping to become a more complete player. “I focused on working more on my threes and posting up in the paint and finishing through contact,” she said.

So far, so good, as of time of writing, Maize South was off to a blazing hot start, winning by scores as dominant as 89-16 and 82-31 in their first few games. Howie set personal and team goals that were lofty, but achievable, stating, “My personal goals this season are to at least get 10 rebounds and 10 points in every game and the team goal is to make it to state.”

When asked about her accomplishments, Howie stated that starting all four years on varsity was the thing she took the most pride in. She also spoke highly of her team, saying “(My) favorite part about being on this team is that we all work together. Nobody is running the show by themselves.” That kind of teamwork is fueling an excellent start to the season for the Lady Mavericks, and with upcoming contests against tough opponents such as Derby, Hutchinson, and Valley Center, Howie and her squad will surely be tested.

After high school, Howie plans to attend Kansas State University and study biology.
