Liliana Cortez has just completed her final year of high school at Maize High School as she is also finishing up her year playing on the soccer field. As a senior, Cortez was a captain for the team and she had set the goal of being a more vocal leader for her team. A goal she set for her team is the making it to the big show of high school athletics, the state tournament.
During the offseason, Cortez spent time preparing for her final season of high school soccer by playing lots of soccer. Cortez plays soccer all year because she plays on a club team. While with her club team, Cortez would practice three times a week, and then the team would compete on the weekends in tournaments in the Kansas City area.
Last year, Maize showed all the doubters how good they were at soccer. Many people believed Cortez and her team would not make it to state, but they won the regional tournament. Not only did Maize win regionals, but Cortez was named honorable mention as a midfielder. Regionals is something Cortez and her team are looking forward to competing in again this year.
As a senior, Cortez wanted to enjoy the last times she had on the soccer field with her teammates and soak in the memories. In the fall, Cortez has plans to attend Newman University and continue her soccer career for Newman along with studying sonography. In addition to soccer for the high school, Cortez has been involved in Business Professionals of America and National Honor Society.
