Maize South’s Caroline Giroux – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Alexandria Johnson Shelter Insurance

By Cooper Chadwick

Next season, Maize South High School senior Caroline Giroux will attend the University of Central Arkansas, but for now she is focused on her final high school season.

“What excites me most about this upcoming season is the opportunity to grow our team’s talent and build strong friendships that will improve our chemistry on the field,” Giroux said.

Over the offseason, Giroux focused on conditioning and agility training.

“I pushed myself with long sprints and endurance runs along with private training sessions to get extra touches on the ball outside of club. I also played club soccer with FC Wichita, competing in games and showcases, and stayed active in the offseason by playing with Wichita Luck, an indoor arena team,” Giroux said.

Giroux also worked to improve her decision-making and critical thinking during games.

“I want to react faster under pressure — whether that’s passing, dribbling or shooting. This is especially important as I prepare to compete at a higher level after my high school career,” Giroux said.

Last season, Giroux was named to the all-tournament team, all-metro first team and all-state second team. This year, she has even bigger goals for herself and her team.

“Some of my goals this season are to earn first-team all-state and all-metro. I would also love to make it to the Final Four with my team, especially since this is my last year. It’s something we’ve all been working toward and would mean a lot to accomplish together,” Giroux said.

Excited to play at the next level, Giroux still remembers her reason why.

“I love soccer because of the challenge — competing to win the ball and making plays before it even reaches my feet. That mindset comes from my dad, Dan Giroux, who played at Newman University,” Giroux said.
