For Kanyon Akers, baseball has always been about more than just the game. The Maize South senior has built his career around that mindset, and heading into his final season, that approach continues to define who he is on and off the field.
“I’ve been playing baseball as soon as I could stand up,” Akers said.
Throughout his career, Akers has had his share of standout moments, but one in particular sticks out. The first swing of his junior season resulted in a home run and served as an early statement that set the tone for what he could bring to the field.
Now, as a senior, his focus has shifted toward something bigger than individual highlights. After battling a torn labrum, Akers is determined to work his way back and contribute in every way possible.
“My personal goal this season is to fully recover from surgery and get back on the mound for my team,” Akers said. “Our team goal is to have a ring on our finger at the end of the year. That’s what we’re working toward every day.”
Akers also understands the importance of setting a standard for the future. As one of the program’s leaders, he takes pride in leading by example and showing younger players what it takes to compete at a high level.
“We’re trying to lead by example in everything we do so the underclassmen can follow that,” Akers said.
